ISKA UK AGM 2009

ISKA UK had its Annual General Meeting on the 8th February at Jurys Inn Birmingham. The meeting was chaired by ISKA UK Executive Director Paul Hennessy and was opened with the chairman’s report.

During 2008 ISKA UK sanctioned 80 events compared to 2007 that saw 62 events sanctioned, showing a growth of 22%. There were actually 101 events scheduled for 2008 with 21 being postponed or cancelled. One downside to this success was the training of new officials and updating and implementation of new rules and regulations was delayed or sidelined this will be addressed in 2009. The ISKA UK Amateur division came of age last year with the UK team dominating the World Amateur Championship bringing home a total of 116 medals. The 2008 British Amateur Open Championship broke all previous attendance records and is now a premier event on the UK Martial Arts circuit. The UK Director of Amateur rules and regulations Pete Richardson was promoted to European Director of Amateur rule and regulations a clear indication of the hard work he puts into the Amateurs. The ISKA also expanded globally, sanctioning major World Championship events in America, Australia, Japan and throughout Europe as well as developing new markets in Asia, Africa and South America.

The majority of the meeting was concerned with the new updated edition of ISKA Rules and Regulations which includes separate and detailed criteria for scoring Muaythai and Kickboxing. Spinning back fist will be legal for Kickboxing matches from B class and the number of rounds for National titles will be extended to seven and British titles to nine, regional titles will remain at five rounds. All fighters competing in ISKA sanctioned events will have to produce a valid license from their club/gym or association that includes a fight record. These new rules will come into effect from the 1st June 2009.  Sub-Committees were formed for Rules & Regulations (John Blackledge, Pete Richardson, Mike Fowles) Disciplinary Action (Chris Sparkes, Jagtar Johal, Andrew Brownbridge) and Ratings (Bern Giam, Dale Wood, Jeff Copp and Stuart Davis)

A new MMA division was announced with two new directors being appointed. Lee Hasdell ISKA UK Director Pro-MMA and Allan Clarkin ISKA UK Director Amateur-MMA, both men have vast experience. ISKA UK will sanction Pro-MMA Regional, National and British title fights and plans to establish a full Pro-MMA circuit by the end of the year. Amateur MMA will be included for the first in the ISKA European Amateur Championships to be staged in Rome in October 2009.

A long day was wrapped up by nominating and agreeing the winners of the ISKA UK 2008 Awards. Although there will be no awards ceremony or physical awards it was felt that some achievements should be recognised.
