ISKA UK First Quarter 2009 Business as Usual

The economic downturn has not yet had a major effect on fight sports, the first quarter of 2009 saw ISKA UK sanction a total of 16 events, 11 in the month of March.

The events included 3 World title fights, 2 Commonwealth title fights and 9 British, National and regional title fights. Promoters have reported some difficulty finding new sponsors, companies now have the credit crunch the deal with and are reluctant to part with their money, but tickets sales are steady and meeting most expectations. With the average ticket price at £25.00 it seems fight fans are still ready to turn out for a good fight card. The Amateur division also seems unaffected by the recession, the annual ISKA English Amateur Championships staged on the 29th March at the Crystal Leisure Centre in Stourbridge had its largest attendance to date for both competitors and spectators.

ISKA UK have been actively supporting women’s fight sports offering concessions to promoters in return for staging women’s title matches, from a slow start these initiatives have started to pay off.  The last event of 2008 featured a Ladies World title fight when Julie Kitchen stopped Ivanilda Vaz Te from Portugal for the ISKA Light-welterweight title. The first World title fight for 2009 was also a Ladies World title, Michelle Newell stopped French girl Lucy Mairot to take the ISKA Super- Atomweight belt on the 15th March at Wolverhampton Race Course. On the 29th March Helene Garnett faced Holland’s Jorina Baars at the Octagon Centre in Sheffield to contest the ISKA Ladies World Welterweight title. The Dutch girl won a close points decision, Promotes take note Barrs and Garnett demonstrated very clearly that women can compete at a high level and deliver action packed and entertaining matches.

The full effect of the economic downturn still remains to be seen, promoters and gym owners may have to raise their game if they want to survive. ISKA UK has 20 events scheduled for the second quarter so it’s business as usual for now.
