Jason Vassallo dedicates fight to fallen soldier
World Kickboxing Champion Jason Vassallo dedicated his prestige match with Aaron Robinson at the Circus Tavern to honour and memory of Lance Corporal Nicky Mason of the 2nd battalion, the Parachute Regiment, who was killed in an explosion in Helmand province Afghanistan on Saturday the 13th of September 2008.
Lance Corporal Nicky Mason 1981-2008
Nicky Mason was from Aveley in Essex and was born on the 20th of December 1981 a lifelong friend of Jason, he joined the Army in 2001 and trained in Catterick north Yorkshire, the following year he became part of 2 Para. In 2005 he was promoted to Lance Corporal in recognition of his qualities as a leader and soldier. As well as Afghanistan he completed operational tour of Northern Ireland as well as two tours in Iraq. He also represented his company and battalion at boxing and martial arts. Major Simon Britton commanding officer said “he was an excellent soldier but his outstanding quality was his warmth and character his ready smile was infectious and his affect upon the morale for those who lived and fought beside him will be truly missed. Too dearly missed to be forgotten a much loved son a loyal brother and friend. Jason made his ring entrance with members of Nicky Mason’s Parachute Regiment a minutes silence was observed in remembrance followed by a minutes of clapping an emotional moment for everyone present. The match was full of fast paced action, the young contender Aaron Robinson gave the champ a fight but was overpower in the sixth round with a combination of head and body shots that forced a stoppage. KRUSH 18 staged at Korakeun Hall, Tokyo on the 3rd May by Good Loser Productions, featured an international prestige match between England’s Reece Crooke and Japanese rising star Shota Takiya. Crooke on the comeback trail was trying to fight his way into the World’s top ten, Takiya was not going to give up his spot. Read more
