KBX Super 8

Showsport International will stage KBX SUPER 8 an eight man middleweight kickboxing tournament on the 13th July at Aston Event Centre in Birmingham. The line up will include all of the most successful middleweight kickboxers in the UK, any one of them capable of headlining a show on their own.

So far five champions have confirmed they will take up the challenge, including former undisputed World Champion Lex Easdon, IKF World Middleweight Champion John Orchard, ISKA Light-Middleweight World Champion Fran Zuccala, former ISKA Super-middleweight World Champion Brian Aston and ISKA British Middleweight Champion Ricky Gammon. Yet to pick up the gauntlet are former WKA World champion Dean Sugden and former British Champions Christopher Morgan, David Lockwood and Jason Curtis.

Never before has so much talent been brought together on a single event under Full Contact Kickboxing rules. The weight limit is 75kg. Each match will be 3×3 minute rounds. The winner will have to prevail in three fights in one night: eight men, one ring, one champion. The prize money for the winner is £3,000 with attendance fees, bonuses for the semi-final and final, ticket commission and sponsorship deals: the winner could earn in excess of £5,000.

KBX SUPER 8 hopes to raise the profile of kickboxing which has fallen behind other fight sports such as Muaythai, K-1 and MMA, all of which enjoy worldwide television exposure and major sponsorship deals. Kickboxing needs to be repackaged in order to reach a wider audience and the attention of the TV networks. The KBX format will showcase the UK’s most talented kickboxers in a professional production.  The promoters Showsport International have been behind some of the UK’s most successful events including K-1 Battle of Britain, K-1 UK MAX, PAIN & GLORY MUAYTHAI SUPERFIGHTS and last year signed five fighters with UFC.

You have to wonder why they are still involved in Kickboxing. There is grassroots support for Kickboxing. An average show draws about five hundred spectators but even major world title fights struggle to attract more than a thousand spectators. Showsport International is willing to bet there is a larger audience for a well presented, quality kickboxing show. Aston Event Centre is a well appointed, centrally located venue that has hosted major fight cards since the 1980s. It has a seated capacity of almost 3,000 spectators.
