US Open and ISKA World Martial Arts Championships an Unprecedented Success
With 40 countries represented and what appears to have been more than 2,500 competitors, the 2009 ISKA WORLD MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPIONSHIPS hosted at the 36th Annual US OPEN on July 3rd and 4th in Disney World, Florida lived up to its’ reputation in every way!
Long recognized as the world’s most prestigious tournament, this year’s spectacular event added divisions in sport jujitsu and submission grappling to a menu that already included more than 400 divisions in point fighting, continuous fighting, forms, weapons and team events. The ISKA World Breaking Championships continued to be a feature event for the more than 7,000 spectators amazed by the calibre of martial arts athletes and performers that took the stage.
In the Combat
In the Combat Board Breaking division, where you are required to use both hands and both feet to break boards in multiple directions simulating a self defence encounter, DREW SERRANO broke 21 boards in 8 seconds to claim a world title belt.
Light Weight Power Board Breaking went to perennial favourite FRED LASALA who crashed through 8 unspaced boards with a side kick.

By winning the “open entry” division on Friday he earned a spot in the World Championship on Saturday. He seized his opportunity by destroying 14 two-inch concrete slabs with a single elbow strike earning him the 2009 title.
Abilene, Texas native and Breaking Icon, Larry Fields claimed the ULTIMATE BREAKING CHAMPION title by winning Creative Breaking, Power Wood Heavy and placing highly in the other two events as well. Larry continues to be “THE MAN” when it comes to overall breaking dominance.
