Andy Howson goes out on his shield

Andy Howson put his ISKA World bantamweight Muaythai title on the line at Leeds Town hall on the 7th May 2011 in a rematch with ISKA Commonwealth Champion Dean James. Howson lost a decision to James in March 2010. Howson joined a growing list of ISKA Champions willing to defend their title against the best.

This was a real battle that had superb Muay Thai skills, real edge of the seat excitement and high drama. Dean was clinical and cool throughout and Andy proved he is a true warrior right until the end.

Early in the fight, Andy looked strong and determined managing to throw Dean and kick him off his feet. However, Dean never looked phased and used superb timing, distancing and vision to strike with real venom. Andy put hard kicks into Dean’s leg when he caught kicks and teeps and Dean replied shaking Andy with punches and knees, and cutting and then dropping him with an elbow. It is testament to Andy’s warrior spirit that when he was hurt, he was at is most dangerous, attacking ferociously in the fourth after Dean opened up another gaping wound in Andy’s forehead with a diving elbow. Dean remained calm and clinical in the face of the storm as Andy attacked like a man possessed. Attacking relentlessly Andy gave everything he had but the damage done was too great and blinded by blood the referee decided he was only going to get injured more in the ensuing melee.

Not only did Andy prove he was a true warrior by going out on his shield, he also showed the mark of a great fighter showing his generously by publically acknowledging the quality of Dean’s performance before he confirmed his own retirement in a speech to his fans. Andy has been a credit to his coach, his gym and to the UK. He has been involved in some epic battles against some outstanding opponents; I have struggled to think of a boring or mediocre fight Andy has been part of and I have watched quite a few. Andy walked from the ring with his head held high to cheers and he deserved every clap and cheer. Andy, you will be sadly missed as a combatant in the ring, but your legacy will endure and you will continue to help elevate UK Muay Thai.
