Bajrami KO’s Onda to retain heavyweight title

ISKA World heavyweight Champion Xhavit Bajrami made a forth successful defence of his Muaythai Super-heavyweight against Japan’s Takenori Onda on the 2nd June at the Swisslife Arena in Luzern, Switzerland. The card also featured an 86kg K-1 rules eight man tournament

Champions should be judged by how many times they defend their title, not how many titles they have. Xhavit Bajrami stepped up to defend his title for the fourth time since with winning the belt in 2009, he face Takenori Onda from Nagoya, Japan a former Karate Champion with over 100 full contact Karate tournament fights to his credit and a professional kickboxing record of 21-6 and the current HEAT heavyweight Kickboxing Champion. The weigh in and press conference was staged on the roof terrace of the Metropol Hotel in Luzern with stunning views of the city.

In the opening round both men went through the usual feeling out process testing each other defences.  Bajrami stepped up a gear on the second round pressing forward attacking with middle and low kicks, Onda seemed happy to defend, like he was holding back waiting for his older opponent to tire, if so he had misjudged Bajrami. In the Third round Bajrami attacked with more intent but Onda still defended and held fire. In the opening second of the fourth round Bajrami backed Onda into a corner then connected with a devastating left leg head kick, Onda was unconscious before fell to the matt no count was required.

The 86kg K-1 rules eight man tournament was won by Switzerland’s Janosh Nietlispach who stopped all three opponents in a total of five rounds.
