Fight Ikon 5: ‘Fight For a Life’
On Sunday 21st November, at the Willows, the home of Salford Reds Rugby Club, Fight Ikon presented their fifth offering; a charity event entitled 'Fight For A Life' in aid of the 'LifeForAKid.com' organisation. The fact that this took place at all was an achievement in itself, given the appauling news that promoter Darren Sherlock recieved the week previous when he was diagnosed with Lymphoma and pressures placed on Ikon by the council, but in spite of this, a good time was had by all who were at the show.
Main eventing was the Dinky Ninjas Fight Team’s Dean Reilly, who took on the gallant Nathan Thompson of South Shields MMA. The action was at first tentative, with the pair vying for superiority in the clinch. Thompson landed the first truly meaningful blow though; a right uppercut which stunned his Scottish opponent. However, Reilly regained his composure and decked Nathan with a knee to the body. He then followed up with some ground and pound before the referee called a halt to the action after 2:50 of the first round. Reilly improves to 4-1 with this win.
Marcin Zontek lived up to his hype in the other Professional bout on the card, blasting a shellshocked and admittedly overmatched Neal Thompson in just 33 seconds. The striking of Salford MMA’s Zontek was just too much for his opponent to handle, and after a head kick had him floored for the second time, Marcin went in for the kill and the referee was quick to intervene. Zontek moves to 5-5 with this victory, while this was Thompson’s Pro debut.
In B-Class Amateur action, Steve Ormshaw overcame Salford MMA’s Chris Webb by unanimous decision. He controlled the action in general, despite the brave attempts of Webb, and even busted up the nose of the hometown man. Walkden MMA’s Ormshaw is now 2-0, while Webb drops to 1-2.
Mark Halford earned a quick Submission victory in his bout with Dan Hall, sinking in a Guillotine choke which forced the Team Allegiance 17-year old to tap. Unfortunately, the referee didn’t see the tap, meaning that Hall went out cold from this manouevre, and after 33 seconds of round one, he decreased to 0-1. Halford is now 1-0.
The bout between Wolfslair’s Andy Green and Jon Wells of Team Colosseum never really got going, due to a cut near the eye of the latter of the pair. After a couple of minutes of even action, the bout was ruled a ‘no contest,’ much to the disdain of both participants.
An equally disappointing result was a no contest between the oldest active fighter in the UK at 53, Mike Skerratt and Pete Milner. This was stopped after just seconds of action, when Skerratt was poked in the eye accidentally.
A better bout was Daniel Hitchin’s unanimous decision win over Chris McMullen. Hitchin controlled on top, and the judges’ verdict was well earned. Both were debuting.
Preston Gracie Barra’s Chris Brown had to endure a tough 3x3’s in an Amateur C Class offering against 6’6” Welterweight Liam Burgess of Lost Boyz MMA. Eventually though, he prevailed by majority decision after a hard fought battle on the floor. This was Brown’s debut, whereas Burgess drops to 0-2.
16-year old Sam Hodgin finished his bout in double quick time, forcing Dave Burke to tap out to a triangle after just 30 seconds. Hodgin, now 4-0, has the potential to develop into a very good fighter. Burke is now 1-3.
John Carney of Huyton MMA showed a lot of determination to last as long as he did against a foe that was twelve years older and ultimately visibly stronger in Ricky Johnson of Preston GB. However, he eventually succumbed by arm triangle after 1:36 of the second round. His record now stands at 0-2, while Johnson has got off the mark with a win.
In the show opener, Bantamweights Dean Manley and Mark Thomas competed, with the first of the two, representing Salford MMA taking the win by Kimura in round two after dominating the first round wherever the action went. For both, who were 16 and 15 respectively, this was their first taste of MMA action.
