ISKA Scottish Open Championships 2011

Wishaw sports centre played host to the Scotland qualifiers for the 2011 ISKA European Championships on Sunday 22nd of May. I.S.K.A. Scottish Amateur Director Dave Baptist was extremely please with the success of the turn out. The day began with an excellent selection of fights from the beginner and intermediate sections, both of which had a wealth of fighters that showed a great potential to have success in the martial arts circuit, should they continue to show the determination that has brought them this far.

We later moved onto the focus point of the day, and the thing that had an array of the countries’ top fighters put their years of hard work to the test in an attempt to be selected to have the honour of representing their country in Lido de Jesolo, Italy in October.  We began the qualifying categories with the kid’s categories, with all doing their clubs and themselves proud.
In the forms Dean Sutherland showed an impressive display of technique and control to take first place.  Over in light contact Liam Nardone showed impressive form, allowing him to narrowly see off Luke Brawley in the final of -30kg to clinch the gold.  Robbie Sommerville performed well in -45kg; however this was not enough to defeat Calum Reynolds, a worthy champion in the blow for blow face off.  The +71kg category continued the momentum of the day, seeing Ryan Bignell take gold comfortably.
Moving into semi contact the high levels of skill from the kids continued, a fine example of this being the -45kg battle for gold between Ryan Robertshaw and Liam Fleming, with Ryan managing to tip the score in his favour.  Weighing in at -51kg newcomer Dean Apicella showed promise for good things to come, taking bronze, however the finalists Craig Frazer and Sam Burton showed the experience that has brought them this far, winning gold and silver respectively.

It was not only a day for the boys however, with some of the girl’s categories providing all the excitement we have come to expect from the impressive IAKSA Scotland circuit.  Light contact fighters Jodie Turner and Millie Lawrie fought valiantly in the final of -40kg, with Millie narrowly coming second to Jodie, an impressive fighter who moved on to also receive gold in semi contact.  Louise Fell fought strongly in the -55kg final to see off Gadi Corkin and take home the gold, moving onto semi contact to take second, Sarah McAllister walking away with 1st place.
The men’s categories were to follow with Mark O’Flaherty taking gold in an impressive performance against Ali Blaikie in the -75kg light contact final.  David Firth then showed all why he is at the top end of the sport, winning gold in both the semi and light contact at the +91kg weight division.  After narrowly missing out on the light contact gold to Jamie McClelland at -63.5kg, Scott Bates went on to demonstrate his skill in semi contact where he won his second medal of the day, taking gold against Julian Brey in a high tempo final.  Leon Phillips then showed us all why he is one of the top semi contact fighters in Scotland, comfortably winning the -81kg category.
The women’s mats were explosive, with two fighters dominating the sections.  Natasha Walker showed off her speed and agility to cleanly take gold in both light contact and semi contact at -66kg, with Karen McGregor doing the same at +66kg in an equally impressive performance.
The veterans section saw Paul Massey take silver at -75kg light contact, Derek Brannan walking away with the gold after an unfortunate accident ended the fight.  Charles Apicella defeated Gavin McDonald in a painfully close match, both fighters performing well in the final of the -75kg semi contact category.
After a successful and greatly enjoyable day the ISKA Scotland team would like to thanks all who attended to compete, spectators and especially, to those that refereed and time kept, ensuring that the day could run as smoothly as it did.
Those who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd are all invited to squad training the next one Sunday 3rd July 2011 from there a team will be selected to fight for Scotland at the I.S.K.A. European Championships in Lido De Jesolo province of Venice Italy in October 25th-29th.
