ISKA UK AGM 2012

The 2012 ISKA UK Annual General Meeting was held on the 12th February at the Burlington Hotel in Birmingham. Due to the swelling ranks of ISKA UK the AGM was held in two parts with the Masters division taking up the morning session and the Amateur division in the afternoon. All the directors from both divisions met together for lunch where discussion and lively debate continued.

The meeting was chaired by ISKA UK Executive Director Paul Hennessy and he open both sessions with the chairman’s report. 2011 was a banner year for ISKA UK, finally not only reaching its goal of sanctioning 100 events in a year but surpassing by sanctioning 108 events an increase of 12% on 2010. It’s a testament to the hard work of the Board of Directors that ISKA UK can maintain growth in double figures in a bleak economic climate. The disciplines sanctioned included 36 Kickboxing events, 41 Muaythai events, 22 MMA events and 9 Semi/light-contact tournaments.

The thorny issue of updating the British rankings was tackled, the rankings have been neglected for some time due to a technical fault with the ISKA UK website and the mountain of work involved. Mr. Farhad Ali was appointed to update the rankings late last year he attended the AGM to report on his progress, there is still plenty of work left to do but the ranking should be ready for spring to coincide with a re-design of the ISKA UK website

The board of directors agreed to change the name of the pro division to Masters Division, as the term pro (short for professional) is out of keeping for what is predominantly an amateur sport and there are no athletes making a full time living from competing in Kickboxing or Muaythai.

The growth of ISKA in Europe was discussed and how ISKA UK Directors and officials will play a bigger role in Europe in the coming year. ISKA now sanction many major televised events featuring ISKA World title matches in France, Germany and Switzerland and a whole host of smaller events across Europe.

Time was spent discussing how ISKA UK could provide a better service to its members, promoters and champions. How we could improve are marketing and raise the associations profile in the media. A new line of merchandise in including tee shirts and polo shirt was agreed on.

The amateur division meeting covered preparation for the English National Championship (1st April Stockland Green Leisure Birmingham), the International London Open (3rd June Excel London) and the World Champion (31st October-2nd November Valkenburg, Holland).

ISKA UK Amateur directors will play a major part in the organization and officiating of the World Championships. A new team manager will be appointed to take care of the England Team, guest coaches will also be brought to prepare the team, every effort will be made to insure the team has a successful and enjoyable World Championships.

The meeting ended with the selections for the ISKA UK Awards, winners will be announced shortly
